Founder
Philemon founded The Strategic Founder to back exceptional founders with the appetite to build at civilizational scale, and to help them create the companies that will permanently expand what Africa can make, know, build, do, move, finance, or organize.
He has worked across product development, marketing, market research, and consulting, and has worked directly with founders and startups on developing their products, sourcing and developing talent, solving their distribution, and fixing their strategy. He advises founders on intellectual formation, strategy, hiring, distribution, and expansion.
He is also an economic development researcher and writer. The questions he works on are the ones this institution is built around: why some nations become productive and others do not, what actually accumulates when a society gets richer, how industries are created where none existed, and what kind of mind is required to do that work. The reading behind it runs across development economics, economic history, the history of civilization, political theory, strategy, the productivity of nations and of individuals, and the philosophy of heroism. The manifesto is where that thinking is set out at length.
Those two directions are the whole thesis of the firm. Formation without execution produces commentary. Execution without formation produces companies that are good for a decade and irrelevant after it. The founders who changed what their economies could do have always had both, and almost none of them had an institution to thank for it. TSF exists because that combination should not have to be assembled alone, and because almost nothing in Africa is currently built to produce it on purpose.
The Strategic Founder is deliberately small at the point of judgment and deliberately wide everywhere else.
Backing decisions sit with a small number of people who have worked with a founder directly for three months. It is the reason our judgment is worth anything: a founder always knows whose assessment he is under and whose reputation stands behind him afterward, and there is no committee to hide inside when a call turns out badly.
Around that core, we work with operators, investors, advisors, researchers, and founders who have built before. They run sessions, pressure-test companies, and argue with the founders we take on. We are adding to that group continuously, and we are building the team that will carry this institution well past its first decade.
If you build, invest, teach, or write in ways that touch what we are doing, we would like to hear from you.
Applications are rolling, and we take founders on as they come.
